Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Music Companion App ("we", "us", "our") handles your information when you use our mobile application ("the App"). We are committed to being transparent about what we collect, why we collect it, and how you can control it.

1. Who We Are

2. Data Stored Locally on Your Device

The App stores all of your music library data locally on your device. This includes:

• Pieces, composers, genres, and collections you add to the library
• Practice routines, sessions, and notes
• App settings and preferences

This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to back it up to Google Drive (see Section 5).

3. AI Features and API Keys

The App offers optional AI-powered features (such as practice suggestions and piece details). To use these features, you provide your own API key for a third-party AI provider (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini).

• API keys are stored exclusively in your device's secure storage (iOS Keychain / Android EncryptedSharedPreferences).
• Keys are never included in backups, logs, or any data transmitted to our servers.
• When you use an AI feature, the App sends a prompt (which may include piece titles or practice context you have entered) directly to the AI provider you selected. That data is governed by the AI provider's own privacy policy.

4. Microphone Access

The App requests access to your device's microphone solely to enable pitch-detection and tuning features. Audio is processed on-device in real time and is never recorded, stored, or transmitted.

5. Google Drive Integration (Optional)

You may choose to back up your library data to Google Drive. If you do:

• You will be asked to sign in with your Google account and grant the App permission to create and read files in your Drive (driveFileScope, driveReadonlyScope).
• The App only reads files that it created itself; it does not access any other Drive content.
• Backup and restore are always initiated by you. The App does not sync automatically without your action.
• You can revoke Drive access at any time in your Google Account settings at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

6. Firebase Analytics (Optional, Consent-Based)

The App integrates Firebase Analytics to help us understand how features are used in aggregate. Analytics collection is disabled by default and is only enabled if you explicitly opt in via the in-app consent screen. You can withdraw consent at any time in the App's Privacy Settings. When disabled, no analytics events are sent.

7. Firebase Crashlytics (Always On)

The App uses Firebase Crashlytics to automatically collect crash reports whenever the App encounters an unexpected error. Crash reports help us identify and fix stability issues quickly. Crashlytics is always enabled and cannot currently be disabled by the user.

Crash reports include technical diagnostic information such as device model, OS version, App version, stack traces, and the state of the App at the time of the crash. They do not include your music library content, API keys, or personal identifiers beyond an anonymous installation ID.

8. In-App Purchases

The App may offer in-app purchases processed through the Google Play Store. We do not collect or store payment information. Purchases are handled entirely by Google Play and governed by Google's privacy policy.

9. Notifications and Alarms

The App may send you practice reminders and schedule alarms to prompt your routine. These notifications are generated and displayed locally on your device. No notification content is transmitted externally.

10. Permissions Summary

• INTERNET / ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE – Required to reach AI providers and Firebase services.
• RECORD_AUDIO – Required for pitch-detection and tuning features.
• POST_NOTIFICATIONS – Required to send practice reminders on Android 13+.
• FOREGROUND_SERVICE / RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED – Required to keep a practice timer running reliably in the background and to restore scheduled alarms after device restart.
• SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM / USE_EXACT_ALARM – Required to deliver practice reminders at the precise time you set.
• com.android.vending.BILLING – Required to process in-app purchases through Google Play.

11. Third-Party Services

The App may communicate with the following third parties, depending on the features you use:

• Google LLC – Firebase Analytics (opt-in), Firebase Crashlytics, Google Drive (opt-in), Google Play Billing.
• OpenAI / Anthropic / Google (Gemini) – AI features using the API key you supply. Governed by the respective provider's privacy policy.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party.

12. Data Retention

Your library and practice data are retained on your device for as long as you keep the App installed, or until you delete specific records within the App.

Crash report data is retained by Firebase Crashlytics for 90 days.

Analytics data (if opted in) is retained according to Google Firebase's standard retention periods, which you can review in the Firebase documentation.

13. Deleting Your Data

You can delete your data at any time:

• Library / practice data: Delete individual items within the App, or uninstall the App to remove all locally stored data.
• Google Drive backups: Delete backup files directly from your Google Drive or via the App's Backup screen.
• Analytics data: Withdraw consent via App Privacy Settings, then contact us at music.companion.app@gmail.com to request deletion of any associated Firebase data.
• All data deletion request: Email us at music.companion.app@gmail.com with the subject "Data Deletion Request" and we will respond within 30 days.

14. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

15. International Data Transfers

Crash reports (Crashlytics) and, if opted in, analytics data (Firebase Analytics) may be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where Google operates data centers. These transfers are subject to appropriate safeguards as described in Google's privacy documentation.

16. Legal Disclosure

We may disclose your information if required to do so by law or in response to a valid legal request (e.g. a court order or government agency request).

17. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will notify you within the App. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
